This is the safest method to get your kids involved with this Easter tradition. We had so much fun, dyeing our eggs with whipped cream and food coloring. In Greece we normally dye our Easter eggs at Holy Thursday, but we couldn’t wait any longer.
Let your kids get messy. Let them touch and feel with their fingers the texture of a sweet whipped cream. Let them taste it and place it on their noses. Let them be creative in their own way. It doesn’t matter if our Easter Eggs look like a piece of art. All that matters is to spend time with the family and create wonderful Easter memories.
1 large can or tub of whipped topping, thawed, or homemade whipped cream
12 hard boiled eggs, cooled completely
food coloring, gel or liquid
olive oil, for shining eggs
toothpicks, spoons, disposable gloves
How to do it
Pour vinegar into a bowl. Submerge eggs in vinegar for about 2 minutes. Remove from vinegar and dry with a paper towel. Set aside.
Spread or spray the whipped topping or the whipped cream in a large baking pan/dish with sides.
Drip food coloring over the whipped cream, keeping a space between drops. Swirl slightly with a toothpick. Use a spoon to swirl the colors around the whipped cream. Don’t mix it up too much.
Place the eggs at one end of the baking dish.
Roll them all the way to the opposite end of the baking dish with a stick or with your fingers.
Remove your eggs from the baking dish and set them on a piece of parchment paper. Let your eggs sit for at least 10 minutes, so that the color can set. The longer you let them sit, the brighter your dyed eggs will be. For food safety reasons half an hour would probably be the longest.
Gently wipe off the whipped cream and rinse your eggs under cool water.
Add some shine by brushing them with a little olive oil.
Your eggs should be hard boiled (15 minutes) and completely cool.
The longer you leave the eggs, the darker the color. Gel color does produce a darker color.
You can follow the same dyeing method using shaving cream. But because some of the color will seep through onto the egg white, I prefer using whipped cream.
