How to eat Seafood the Mediterranean-style

There is no arguing. Eating Fish on a regular basis is good for us and our kids in several ways, including building a strong heart and nervous system. And hear this too:

New studies suggest that kids who eat fish at least once a week have intelligence quotients, or IQs, that are nearly 5 points higher than the IQs for kids who ate less fish or none at all. Fish eaters also slept better.

 

 

Here are some tips to help you eat fish the Mediterranean-style:

  • Limit deep fried fish and seafood, even in olive oil, in favor of boiled or grilled to maximize the health benefits.

  • Limit extra salt when preparing your favorite seafood dish. Use herbs (thyme, oregano, dill, parsley etc.) to enhance the natural flavors of seafood. 

  • Swap out butter for olive oil atop your seafood. Do not add heavy sauces. Any sauce will ruin the real taste of fish. To lift the taste drizzle with some extra virgin olive oil and fresh lemon juice.

  • Pair your seafood with whole grain pasta or brown rice. Add some dietary fiber, B vitamins and other important nutrients to an already-nutritious seafood dinner.

  • Serve your seafood with a side of vegetables. A Greek salad, or boiled zucchinis, red beets and wild greens. Delicious seafood pairs for a simple and easy-to-prepare meal.
